| Hunt Introduction I hunted in Kansas a few weeks ago (see my first Kansas Live Hunt and planned to come back this week to hunt the same place. At the last minute, though, I had an opportunity to come hunt with a friend who is an outfitter in northwest Kansas, Matt Burrows, owner of Stick & String Outfitters. Stick & String is a bowhunting-only operation. I'm really looking forward to the hunt this week. Sunday A.M. A Mule deer doe This morning I hunted a really thick bedding area, hoping to catch a buck chasing some does back to bed for the day. I saw two Mule deer does, eight Whitetail does, two 6-point Whitetail bucks and a medium size 8-point Whitetail buck. Unfortunately, only one buck and one Mule deer doe were close enough to get a good photo, most of the other deer were 50-60 yards away on another trail. I'm going to take my climber and hunt that trail tomorrow morning. One of the other hunters in camp shot a nice Rio Grande Turkey tom with his bow this morning. There were several nice bucks seen chasing does this morning, but not in range for any shots. One of the hunters with a nice Turkey Sunday P.M. This evening I hunted the edge of a woods funnel leading to a winter Wheat field. I saw a 6-point buck chasing two does across the field. A little later I saw a small 8-point rubbing a small cedar tree with vigor. I also saw a coyote putting the chase to two does. A few minutes before dark I saw a very nice buck, probably in the 150" range, chase a doe across the field, and then mount and breed her. It was pretty interesting to observe that whole process. Unfortunately the buck never came close enough for a shot. Overall I saw six does and three bucks, but no deer close enough for a photo. I was on the wrong trail again. Right at dark I had almost 50 Rio Grande Turkeys fly up to roost in a group of huge trees less than 50 yards from me. Some turkeys getting ready for bed A beautiful sunset Check back tomorrow for more action!
