Today we spent all day hunting bear in a new area that just opened today. Dale scouted this area yesterday and spotted 5 different bears. We have high hopes for today.

I spent the morning still-hunting through some brush and different trails. There are lots of hazelnuts and serviceberries in this area right now and the bear are really hitting them. The brush I was still-hunting through was very tall and very thick, with just a small amount of visibility on the trail itself. Although I saw some bear scat in different places, I never actually heard or saw a bear.

After this morning's hunt I've come to the conclusion that a spot and stalk bowhunt for bear in this area is much, much more difficult than I had imagined. I didn't realize that there was so much tall, thick brush. I'm having a hard time even spotting a bear. Starting tomorrow I'm going to concentrate on Whitetail for the rest of the hunt.

The brushy area we watched this evening

This evening I helped spot with my binoculars for a rifle hunter. We watched a great looking brushy hillside with a thick, brushy draw at the bottom. This morning one of the guides and hunters saw a bear here but couldn't get a shot. This evening the wind was blowing real hard and if there were any bears in the draw they weren't moving. Throughout the day Dale's rifle hunters spotted 8 bears and rolled 1 but didn't recover it. Several bears seen were too small to shoot, and the rest were moving too fast or too far for a shot.

Lance hunted this morning like I did and saw a good bit of sign but no actual bears. He helped spot for another hunter this evening and they watched a great area but didn't see any bears. This morning the hunters saw more bear.

The area we're hunting is about 10 miles from the B.C. border

Check back for more action tomorrow!

    Trip Notes
This hunt takes place in northeast Washington state Selkirk Mountains range. We are hunting with BearPaw Outfitters, owner Dale Denney. This is an archery hunt for Whitetail Deer and Black Bear. We will be hunting Bear most likely in the mornings and during the day, using a variety of techniques. The Bear should be eating berries and other soft and hard mast at this time of year, so we'll be trying to spot and stalk in on them. We may also hunt some waterholes for bear. This area has a pretty high occurence of color phase black bears.

For Whitetail we will be hunting the evenings and our primary method of hunting will be hunting from treestands overlooking trails heading to some of the many Alfalfa fields in this area. This area has some good bucks, probably a few of which will still be in velvet right now. One of the neat things about hunting this time period is that the bucks are still in their summer routines and somewhat predictable. We'll just how predictable they are!
