Tuesday
Today we spent all day hunting bear in a new area that just opened today. Dale scouted this area yesterday and spotted 5 different bears. We have high hopes for today. I spent the morning still-hunting through some brush and different trails. There are lots of hazelnuts and serviceberries in this area right now and the bear are really hitting them. The brush I was still-hunting through was very tall and very thick, with just a small amount of visibility on the trail itself. Although I saw some bear scat in different places, I never actually heard or saw a bear. After this morning's hunt I've come to the conclusion that a spot and stalk bowhunt for bear in this area is much, much more difficult than I had imagined. I didn't realize that there was so much tall, thick brush. I'm having a hard time even spotting a bear. Starting tomorrow I'm going to concentrate on Whitetail for the rest of the hunt. The brushy area we watched this evening This evening I helped spot with my binoculars for a rifle hunter. We watched a great looking brushy hillside with a thick, brushy draw at the bottom. This morning one of the guides and hunters saw a bear here but couldn't get a shot. This evening the wind was blowing real hard and if there were any bears in the draw they weren't moving. Throughout the day Dale's rifle hunters spotted 8 bears and rolled 1 but didn't recover it. Several bears seen were too small to shoot, and the rest were moving too fast or too far for a shot. Lance hunted this morning like I did and saw a good bit of sign but no actual bears. He helped spot for another hunter this evening and they watched a great area but didn't see any bears. This morning the hunters saw more bear. That's the Columbia River in the picture The area we're hunting is about 10 miles from the B.C. border Check back for more action tomorrow!
